Samsung Alexa Chrome OS-based Netbook and Specs surfaced

Samsung Alexa Chrome OS-based Netbook and Specs surfaced
It was recently reported that Googles Chrome OS netbook, the Cr-48, is out of beta testing and that it could be available this summer. The device may come with a subscription policy attached to a Google account and even a rental plan, but the most important detail has been left out: Whos making the first one?

Earlier this year we heard that Acer was a possibility, as was Samsung. Now rumor has as leaning toward the latter, as a Chrome bug report unwittingly outed. The device is internally codenamed Alex. A Chromium Google doc title Issue 13967 in chromium-os: Improve hardware components probing method outlines USB/PCI operations, and specifically makes reference to Samsung Alex.

Thats not all. Various specs and a mockup have also surfaced via Google docs, although the page has since been restricted. Various blogs got a look beforehand, and here are the details according to Samsung Specs:

* 1280 x 800 pixel display
* (Probably) 10-inches
* 1.5 GHz dual-core Atom N550
* SanDisk SSD P4 (capacity unknown)
* 2 GB RAM
* Qualcomm Gobi 2000 3G card
* Bluetooth/Wi-Fi
* Namuga webcam
* Synaptics touchpad
* Card reader, USB ports, VGA output

Its more than possible the Google I/O event next month will solidify or dash these rumors, and either way were hoping will reveal more about Alex and the Chrome OS netbook. If the device is actually launching this summer, we expect the details to keep coming.

CableJive releases a duaLink Sync cable

CableJive releases a duaLink Sync cable
Im sure that there are many reading this blog that have more than one iDevice. Im sure it is difficult to charge and sync them, as they only come with one sync cable.

Fortunately, CableJive has come out with the dualLink Sync cable which allows the user to connect two iOS devices to a single USB port at once. The charge time is going to be slower, as in half the amount of time.

Im not certain how, but this dualLink Sync cable can actually sync two devices to iTunes at once. Im actually not certain how it does that. In all honesty, iTunes really slows my system down, and I wonder if the iTunes runs as two separate windows or does it do a joint thing.

Anyway, it is possible to get the duaLink Sync Cable for a purchase for about $25.95. You might as well get it and reduce cable clutter.

14-inch Types Of Notebook Computers Review

14-inch Types Of Notebook Computers Review
14 widescreen laptops

Notebook, notebook computer, laptop, and laptop computer are different terms for a small computer, which is mobile, and weighing about 1 to 6 kg or 2.2 to 18 pounds, depending upon the model. In 1979-1980, Bill Moggridge of GRiD Systems Corp. designed one of the first laptops and named it as the GRiD Compass 1101. In May 1983, Gavilan Computer Corp. introduced and first marketed as a laptop, known as Gavilan SC.

In 1989, Compaq introduced Compaq LTE, which was a laptop of a smaller size, about the size of an A4 paper notebook, and it popularly came to be known as a notebook computer or notebook. Thereafter the terms laptop and notebook began to be used interchangeably. Nevertheless, the terms, notebook and laptop are incorrect terms, as due to the heat, many laptops cannot be placed on top of the lap, and most notebooks are not the size of an A4 paper notebook. However, what manufacturers usually call as a notebook, end-users prefer to call it as a laptop; hence both the terms are used.

Thus, further innovations have introduced transportables (which can be moved from one place to another without supporting mobile computing); tablets (which feature touchscreens and support mobile computing); ultra mobile PCs (which are very small and compact tablet PCs); internet tablets (which support internet and mobile computing); personal digital assistants (PDAs), which are pocket-sized and support mobile computing; handheld computers, which represent expensive tablets or PDAs; and smartphone, which is a PDA or a handheld computer with cellphone integration.

Commercial purposes like attending phone calls, receiving and sending emails and faxes, typing out letters and printing them, making presentations with pie and bar charts, and taking data from one place to another can be achieved by any standard notebook. However, high fliers prefer thin-and-light notebooks and for regular office work, ultraportable notebooks are preferred. Both are wireless notebooks so they can be remotely accessed. Scientific purposes are best suited with a notebook that features fast computing speed, good 2D and 3D graphics display, and a large memory, like desktop replacement notebook, and a thin-and-light notebook. Artistic purposes require animation, 2D and 3D drawings, interior & exterior designing, arranging music compositions, post-production audio-video work, etc., which can be fulfilled by desktop replacements, gaming notebooks, and mainstream notebooks.

Educational institutions normally do not prefer notebooks due to its high chance of being stolen. However, to keep up with the times, and to be considered as techno-savvy, they do invest in notebooks. The types of notebooks best suited for educational purposes are mainstream notebooks, and desktop replacements. They need to take the notebook wherever they go, hence, size and weight are major considerations. The type of notebook that fulfills student needs is a thin-and-light notebook with locking facility so that they can lock it with their backpack. Most students report late submission of projects due to their notebooks being stolen.

So no matter what the purpose one might have for using a notebook, it seems that mobility will always seem to be the main reason for such a product purchase. Nowadays with so many models being offered with affordable prices, it seems that notebooks will always be a product in demand. After all it is one of the best selling computer hardware for quite some time. And that says it all.

Cheapest Laptop Computers Review

Cheapest Laptop Computers Review
Technology in 2011 has spread its wings extremely fast. In a few years we have come up to the point when everything is controlled through technology. Many folks have their houses controlled through one remote control. Many years back, we did not have mobile phones , and now we will be able to communicate across the ocean, we will talk on the telephone and see the other person, we will talk online we are able to do anything we want. Technology is in a continuous development, and this is a good thing.

When laptops appeared they sold in millions. These days everybody has a laptop. The 1st ones were computers. People started to use them from the early 1990 and they were in a consistent change. A laptop is a smaller version of a PC Its also called the notebook because it looks like one. A laptop is a computer made for personal use that is small enough to fit in ones lap. As the laptop doesnt have a unit and a massive screen, all its critical parts are in the same device. A PC has a display, a keyboard incorporated, a touch pad or if you cant handle the touch pad you can always put a mouse. Laptops are less difficult to carry around, are practical and can be taken anywhere.

Laptops are great for those that travel a lot. These days everybody works on the computer, every company , every school, every home has laptops. Our entire lives evolve around laptops, mobile telephones and in a laptop you can watch movies, hear music, play games, write documents etc. It has the same features as a standard PC but its only smaller. The price of a computer is a little bit higher than the price of a normal computer. More sophisticated laptops cost more but a pleasant design and with a nice design and with everything you need on it, is reasonably affordable.

Cheapest laptops can be found in specialized stores when its a massive sale. Folk are always attempting to find the cheapest prices and its not a shame to admit it. Those than actually need a laptop but dont have the cash can buy inexpensive PC from a chum that sells it or can search the internet for special offers. Cheapest laptops are also those that dont have so many options or are not of such good quality. For someone that requires a laptop just for writing its the best solution. Those that desire one to install different programs and many games need a better laptop.

As a conclusion, PCs can have different costs. Folk just need to know exactly what they are searching for. This goes also for mobile telephones. One that does not make photos and has a poor configuration will cost less than one that can transmit live and through which you can access the internet. In the end, laptops are a great invention. People dont need to carry around many files and documents,, juts the laptop and they can do their job.

Overall impression

The Aspire 5920 is the first of the new computer "Gemstone" Acer at home: a team of designers in the BMW has designed a house with a modern look and no edges. The quality of materials is much better than the old Aspire. The outer cover has rounded lines and gloss black with the word holographic "Acer" that enhances particularly, but at the expense of all this, I must observe that bends slightly when pressed firmly. To open the LCD panel using the hollow lifting the webcam as a kind of "handle" (remember that BMW designs cars).

The interior is light gray and has a particular line that can like it or not. Looking closely we can see an excellent build quality and precise assembly, so as not to detect strange failure of the shell around the keyboard. Whew! The speakers are integrated above the keyboard and the length in travel from left to right, while the switches of the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are arranged side instead of on the front of the chassis.

Between the LCD and the power button there is a "mood", which turns blue when the notebook is plugged in and with the various LEDs media keys makes a really nice effect. The weight of 3 kg, fits perfectly in accordance with this range of notebooks. On a positive note to close the laptop, just a little pressure. A whole other world than the old Acer!

Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV411 Notebook Review

Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV411 Notebook Review
The Toshiba Qosmio F45-AV411 notebook with a 15.4 inch LCD UltraBright display is a multi-media giant. I looked high and low for a notebook with the capacity to run HD graphics smoothly and accurately. The problem is most notebooks with advanced graphics capability are in the $1300 on up price range. The Toshiba Qosmio F45 has the Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo processor with an Intel GM965 chipset and 1 GB Intel Turbo Memory.

Toshiba did not stop there, it included advanced graphics technology with the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. The super advanced optical drive is equipped with LabelFlash technology that is compatible with virtually all popular DVD/CD formats. Burning DVD/CDs has never been easier and better. These were the main features I was looking for and I was able to find a reconditioned Qosmio F45 on two reputable web sites for $649 and $749 respectively. The difference in price between the two sites is unexplainable. It is the same model.

Laptops Specification :
  • Toshiba includes 802.11a/g/n LAN wireless connectivity. Also, included is an IEEE 1394 data port and Ethernet 10/100 card. The ability to connect up at a HOT SPOT, wireless home network or directly is a cinch. In less than 5-minutes I was able to connect the Toshiba Qosmio to my home wireless network. The built-in deluxe modem obviates the necessity of any external devices.
  • A huge improvement is the inclusion of Harman Kardon speakers and a complete Dolby Digital Sound 5.1 capacity. There isnt a less than $2,000 laptop on the market with the pristine subwoofer and treble sounds found in the Toshiba Qosmio F45. Add some headphones and you are in a concert hall with exceptional acoustics.
  • Toshiba includes 2 GB RAM and a 200 GB hard drive. In addition, the model has an Express Card/Memory slot compatible with Memory Stick Pro, SD, MMC, xD Picture card and a 5-in-1 Bridge Media Adapter. As mentioned previously the advanced optical drive offers enormous capacity for running HD DVD/CD music, video and pictures.
  • The webcam with built-in microphones is a step above most notebook built-in webcams. The internal Graphics Accelerator and other advanced technology has forgiveness for people in motion. I have not had a blur-out or distorted image yet. It is a really fine webcam for keeping in touch with family and friends.
  • I was not a fan of Vista until now. The Toshiba Qosmio F45 comes installed with Windows Vista Ultimate. The OS takes a little getting used to. I will say, the big OS needs the likes of the Toshiba Qosmio F45 to run the platform. I personally think that has been one of the contributing factors in Vistas bad wrap.
  • You wouldnt ask Jeff Gordon to compete at the Daytona 500 with a 4-cylinder souped up Volkswagen. In fact, he would be barred from competing against the standard 8-cylinder field of competitors. The same is true of loading a big performer like Vista on a slow processor, a gig of RAM and little in the way of graphics technology. It sputters, drags and is a major disappointment. Not so, with the revved up Toshiba Qosmio F45.
  • I recommend the Toshiba Qosmio F45 AV411 to anyone with a need for high performance in a notebook.

Where is the .jedit directory on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard

Duke WavingRan into this problem the other day. Where the heck is the .jedit configuration directory for the JEdit editor on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard?

Usually, the .jedit configuration directory can be found in your home directory on any operating system. However, on OS X 10.6, when I did an ls -a in ~, no .jedit.

Solution: For OS X 10.6, look in: ~/Library/jEdit

New Alienware Area 51-m5550 Gaming Laptop

New Alienware Area 51-m5550 Gaming Laptop
If youre looking for top-notch performance, higher-end A/V connections, and futuristic design, the Alienware Area-51 m5550 delivers. However, if its terrible battery life, incomplete set of multimedia features, and high price sour the deal for you, keep on looking.

With its silver coloring, black accents, and glowing alien-head ornament, the m5550 looks way cooler than your typical mainstream notebook. The firm lid and scratch-resistant case give it a sturdy overall bearing. Measuring 14.3 x 10.7 x 1.9 inches, its not bad for its size at 6.8 pounds, though too bulky for regular travel.

The m5550s translucent keyboard is quiet and comfortable to use except for a sinfully short spacebar that slowed our typing at first. The responsive touchpad and mouse buttons are of adequate size, however, and the touchpad features vertical and horizontal scrolling zones for speedier Web page and document navigation; we also like the external touchpad on/off button that lets you prevent unintentional cursor movement when using an external mouse.

The 15.4-inch widescreen display serves up crisp, vivid colors and images, and the WXGA native resolution, average for a display this size, offers a nice balance of readability and screen real estate. (Upgrading to a finer WUXGA panel adds $100 to the price tag-a worthwhile investment for graphics pros.) We appreciate the external volume control wheel, and the two stereo speakers deliver clear audio, though they dont crank as loud as wed like.

The m5550 accommodates some deluxe connections: Besides three USB 2.0 ports, FireWire, S-Video, an ExpressCard slot, and a 4-in-1 card reader, you get a DVI output, for connecting digitally to an external display, and an optical audio port. Also onboard are Ethernet and modem ports, and theres a handy Wi-Fi on/off switch.

Pricey for a mainstream notebook, the $2,429 m5550 we tested came equipped with a top-shelf processor, Intels 2.33-GHz Core 2 Duo T7600, which turned in a simply blazing MobileMark 2005 score of 279. Unfortunately, with high performance came high temperature: The m5550 ran quite hot, particularly on either side of the touchpad, which resulted in sweaty wrists during extended typing sessions. Unless you routinely work with demanding video-editing software, we recommend configuring the m5550 with a lower-end processor; itll generate less heat, extend your battery life, and save you hundreds of dollars, without sacrificing that much speed.

Powered by Nvidias mid-tier 256MB GeForce Go 7600 graphics card, the m5550 notched an impressive 3DMark03 score of 8,235. Gaming performance, on the other hand, was less spectacular: The m5550 turned in only 37 fps on our F.E.A.R. gaming benchmark (with settings on autodetect)-not terrible, but insufficient for hardcore gaming.

For all of its processing muscle, the m5550 fails to live up to its multimedia potential: You get Windows XP Media Center 2005, but no TV tuner option to let you record programs to the 100GB hard drive; an IR port, but no remote; and no external controls for the dual-layer DVD drive. The included software package is similarly modest: Aside from the OS, there are two disc-burning appsand thats it.

In our battery drain tests, the m5550s 6-cell lasted a meager 1 hour and 47 minutes whether the wireless connection was on or offat least an hour and a half less than most mainstream models. The m5550s Wi-Fi reception wasnt particularly great, either; we detected an average throughput of 7.3 Mbps from 15 feet and 6.9 Mbps from 50 feet.

If youre looking for superior processing performance at any cost, the Alienware Area-51 m5550 certainly screams. However, there are plenty of other, more balanced models on the market.

Price: $2,429

Asus Eee Pad Transformer sells out online on day one

iPhone iPad pictureYou know how I have been writing about the EEE Pad Transformer the last couple of weeks. And I have been looking forward to getting my hands on the first Android Honeycomb 3.0 tablet for $399. Well... the EEE pad came out yesterday and is already sold out. :(

Asus Eee Pad Transformer sells out online on day one - Yahoo! News

I guess I should not be surprised. Although it is not on the radar of much of the tech media, Engadget alone has probably built up enough buzz to sell it out. Also, it is my understanding they are shipping pretty low quantities to the US as the device was launched in other countries first.

One other fact learned in the last week. The keyboard that makes the transformer tranform, is not free. It costs an additional $150. So really the device has a price of $549 as opposed to $399 when all is included.

Update GPS TAG, using ExifInterface.setAttribute() and exifInterface.saveAttributes()

Update GPS TAG, using ExifInterface.setAttribute() and exifInterface.saveAttributes()

Last exercise show how to "Read EXIF of JPG file", new member method UpdateGeoTag() will be implemented to update GPS TAG of the file with dummy data.

exifInterface.setAttribute(ExifInterface.TAG_GPS_LATITUDE, DUMMY_GPS_LATITUDE);
exifInterface.setAttribute(ExifInterface.TAG_GPS_LATITUDE_REF, DUMMY_GPS_LATITUDE_REF);
exifInterface.setAttribute(ExifInterface.TAG_GPS_LONGITUDE, DUMMY_GPS_LONGITUDE);
exifInterface.setAttribute(ExifInterface.TAG_GPS_LONGITUDE_REF, DUMMY_GPS_LONGITUDE_REF);

Once all attributes set, you can call exifInterface.saveAttributes() method to update the file.

with updated GPS TAG

In order to write-back data to file in SD Card, you have to modify AndroidManifest.xml grant permission of "android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE".

Corona SDK Approved for Nook Color App Development

iPhone iPad pictureRead Write Web has this great write up on Corona SDK. Basically, it a mobile development environment and simulator that uses the LUA programming language. (LUA has a lot of similarities to JavaScript.)

Corona SDK Approved for Nook Color App Development

The tool allows you to write cross platform applications for the iPhone, iPad, Android or Nook. If you go to the article you will some really well done You Tube videos on the tool. It looks like an amazingly easy way to develop applications, especially compared to objective C.

You can download the Corona SDK and use it all you want for free. Once you have an application developed, you have to pay a $199 per year subscription fee to distribute the app to one platform of your choice (iOS or Android). To distribute to both it costs $349 a year. For the Apple side you also have to spend $99 to join the developer program. Probably a pretty good price if your app is at all successful.

Corona SDK is definitely worth a look.

Webkit without a Browser? PhantomJS

Webkit icon
Why would I want to run a Webkit browser without a graphical user interface? Well there are a lot of good reasons actually. You want to search a page for something in an automated way. Or you may want to test a page from a script. Anyway, that is what PhantomJS allows you to do.

The story is a little old as I have been meaning to write this up for some time. However, the tool is pretty cool and worth a look.
