Dolphin Browser for iPad and iPhone

iPhone iPad pictureThanks to this story by Ina Fried, I gave the Dolphin browser a try this week. It was a pleasant surprise to see how well this free browser works. It is especially useful on the iPhone with its gestures and tabbed interface. This features are golden on a device with such limited real estate.

Definitely worth a look. Check it out here.

Zombie Shooter for iPhone/iPad

Zombie Gunship
Zombie Gunship

Macworld had a small blurb in the November issue. Not only do you get to shoot zombies, but you get to save people at the same time! It doesn't get much better than that. Details on the iTunes store.

Cyberduck FTP/SFTP/DAV Client Now on Mac App Store

Cyberduck (by David Kocher) has been my favorite FTP/SFTP client for the Mac for a number of years. It essentially has a folder interface with which you can drag and drop files to or from your destination. It includes a bookmark system that is very easy to use. And most important, it supports SFTP, in addition to FTP, which is the defacto standard for copying files on the Internet. Recently I also discovered that Cyberduck has full DAV support which works great with the Oracle Beehive server at work.

Cyberduck is still available for free as an open source product. But it is also available on the Mac app store for $24.95. A great price considering what a great product this is.

App Week

This week I am going to write about some apps and Mac apps I use a lot or have used a lot in the past.

The Mac app store was announced quite a while back, but I never used it until a few weeks ago. Much to my surprise a number of my favorite apps now are on the store. Simply purchasing the app on the store, makes it available on all your Macs. Thus, the App store allows you to sync your purchased apps to all your Macs. Hope you like these apps as much as I do.

Apple Reverses Course On In-App Subscriptions - Mac Rumors

Well Apple is listening to me, sorta. They haved backed off on their in app subscriptions. Now you can include items sold outside the app store, as long as there is no link to your app store.

So I think the reduces the chance of an instance anti-trust law suit. However, it still has got to make Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and just about every newspaper really angry. Expect more HTML5 clients like the financial times app. And lots more Android devices from the big book stores. Here are the details from MacRumors.

iChromy: A Chrome-like Browser for the iPad

Have you ever wanted a Chrome browser for the iPad? A simple browser with tab support and great peformance? Well since Google probably can't create one, check out iChromy on the app store. It is a simple, functional and fast web browser with tab support. I would prefer it had a toolbar of bookmarks, but the drop down menu it uses works quite well.

Check it out. The App is free.

iPhone/iPad Top Apps on Web

iPhone iPad pictureOne thing I think the whole iPhone/iPad ecosystem lacks, is a really good web site for browsing apps. I don't know what anyone else thinks, but the iTunes store UI pretty much sucks.

Well to acknowledge a step in the right direction, it looks like Apple has added the top 100 paid and free apps to its web site. Nice! More of the same please Apple.

Mashable App for iPad

One of my favorite web sites has released a free app for the iPad. The Mashable app is essentially a wrapper for the Mashable site. It downloads the HTML stories from Mashable and caches them. This allows you to quickly and easily browse stories and topics. Here is what the app looks like in portrait.

Clicking on the Navigation button brings up a popup list of site categories.

Of course if you put the app in portrait mode, the list of categories is always displayed.

Simple, yet elegant. Nicely done.

iPad: SimpleNote is the Note App You are Looking For

Ever since I got an iPhone, I have been looking for a replacement for Notes apps. The app only syncs with Mac Mail or Outlook, neither of which I use. What I need is a notes app that can sync to the Net. The app should allow me to add notes from any desktop machine, notebook, phone, or iPad and sync them to all the devices.

Well SimpleNote does that, and it does it very well. Nothing fancy about this app. You just get a box you can type in. The first line is the title, the rest just text.

On the iPad, SimpleNote looks something like this:

The title of your notes on the left. And the text associated with the selected note on the right.

In the iPhone, the interface is simpler. Just click on the note title brings up the note. Here is a snapshot.

The syncing is truly amazing. Just bring up SimpleNote on whatever platform you are using, bing, you have the latest and greatest notes. This is an app everyone should have.
