Create your own Evening Newspaper

Ever want to make your own Drudge Report or similar news site? ReadWriteWeb has a story on Mule Design, a web consulting company, that decided to do just that. They wanted to create a daily summary of news that emulated the evening additions published by newspapers. So instead of creating a super busy mess, like most news sites, they created Evening Edition.

Evening Edition is a very simple site with only a handful of stories listed. The excellent design makes the site easy to read. Definitely a concept worth emulating. And heck, anyone could come up with a similar design and start their own evening addition. Which would be kinda cool.

Now I am not convinced this is a huge break-thru that will save all newspapers. However, I think it does highlight the fact that often, less is more. I am struck at how awful most newspaper sites and newspaper apps generally are. The designs are busy with pop overs and pop unders and text everywhere. Just think how much more traffic they could get if they emulated this design.

Google News worth Another Look

Google LogoHave you looked at Google News recently? I had not in a while and was surprised by the improvements after using the system for a while.

Customize

The main thing that is different is you can customize a lot of stuff. You can choose which news sources you prefer so those are favored over others. You can also add new categories to the list of topics on the left. This is a bit hit and miss. For example, I added a category for Java which seems to work pretty good. However, when I added JavaScript, I received a number of stories that had a JavaScript error message in them. That was a bit of a hoot.

Trending Topics

One other feature that I really like is how trending topics are incorporated. If you click on "Technology" for example, under that heading a list of the current trending topics related to tech are displayed. This is a great use of their search data and very useful.

So check it out, it is another good data point when looking for the latest news in tech.

3 Great New Tech Sites on the Web

Internet IconThree cheers for corporate bureaucracy! Thanks to a few buyouts and mergers a few web sites have been spawned much to our benefit.

The Verge

Josh Topolsky and these Engadget refugees have set up a really nice gadget and tech web site. A different kind of design for their site, but I like it. It sort of melds a newspaper layout with a web page. I like the look and the content.

PandoDaily

Sarah Lacey left TechCrunch to create this site. The focus is on cool new web sites and businesses. A nice clean interface and a lot of good information.

ANewDomain.net

Gina Smith left the new Byte.com to start this site. Thanks corporate overlords for unleashing Gina and gang. Lots of good writers (including John C Dvorak and Jerry Pournelle) and good stories.

Engadget Editors/Writers Moving to "This is My Next"

Webkit icon
AllThings D has the write up on the exodus of Engadget writers to a new venture. This is my Next is a placeholder for a yet unnamed new gadget blog. I heard Josh on Twit a couple of times and it sounds like they want to focus more on quality and less on quantity. Who has time to read 50 posts a day? Heck who has time to read 30 a day from one site? So I whole-heartedly agree with this new move.

As is typical, when some organizations get really big they lose their focus on what is important. Once your readers become cash cows, you are headed for trouble.

Microsoft Buys Skype

Microsoft Logo

Microsoft has purchased Skype. Let us hope they keep supporting Skype as the great cross platform tool that it is. Who knows, maybe they can fix the terrible user interface on the Mac? :)
