iPhone OS 3.1.3 Released

They've released iPhone/iPod Touch 3.1.3 and so far are still signing 3.1.2 (as of 2/2/10). This doesn't mean that tomorrow (2/3/10) they'll continue signing 3.1.2 shsh requests. We're getting close to another drought. We've been surviving in 'years of plenty' and the 'years of want' are coming.



Ok all biblical analogies aside. 3.1.3 firmware offers zero substantial value. All it does is close the holes that enabled 3.1.2 to be jailbroken. Please, warn your friends, neighbors anyone that will listen. Have them save their shsh on Cydia or if they have even a remote amount of technical savvy, download the firmware umbrella and save their own shsh files locally.



3.1.2's days are numbered... This is probably the best we'll have it for a very long time. (My guess is late summer if any 4.0 potential exploits survive...) 



Incidentally, I'll have Umbrella/TinyTSS updated for 3.1.3 signatures soon. I'm in no hurry as 3.1.3 is worthless...



*DO NOT UPDATE TO 3.1.3 IF YOU HAVE ANY DESIRES OR NEAR-FUTURE DESIRES TO JAILBREAK*



(Even if you have your shsh saved, I still wouldn't mess with it...)



*UPDATE: If I'm not mistaken, 3.1.3 also has the added bonus of updating your baseband to 05.12.01.



This is HUGELY bad for folks relying on having an unlocked iPhone. This means that even if you have your shsh saved on Cydia or locally, there is nothing you can do to get your baseband back to an unlockable version if you update to 3.1.3 out of curiosity.

iPhone OS 3.1 Locked

It looks like Apple finally locked 3.1 and will now only sign 3.1.2 iPhone 3gs OS ECID shsh requests. It just goes to show that anyone that has any desire to save their OS version should obtain their ECID shsh signatures using Umbrella as soon as possible before they release the next iPhone OS and render 3.1.2 locked.

Blacksn0w Day

As all of you already know (except my wife because she reads this blog to spy on me... ily honey) today @geohot is releasing blacksn0w which will unlock the 05.11.07 baseband for the iphone (3gs/3g). This is terrific news for all of you that are on unofficial carriers. If there are any of you reading this post now that have stupidly accidentally upgraded your iphone os from 3.0/3.0.1 and lost your unlock, you will be granted a get-out-of-jail free card (pun intended). As @geohot said, this is likely the best all of us have it. So be very careful from now on. One - three misclicks in iTunes can render your phone jailed and locked once again.





But what happens when @pple stops signing signature hashes for 3.1/3.1.2 for 3gs phones? 





How will we be able to fix a phone that is stuck rebooting or needs to be restored for any reason once @pple decides that you MUST update to the latest iPhone OS because they won't sign your ecid SHSH to allow you to restore 3.1/3.1.2?





You have two great options:



1. Saurik automatically saves your ecid SHSH file on his secure servers if you install cydia on your jailbroken iPhone OR if you point to cydia.saurik.com in your etc/hosts file and perform an iTunes restore.





NOTE: ALWAYS be careful when trying to restore via iTunes.





2. TinyTSS and Umbrella are your local option. Using these two tools will allow you to save the all-important ecid shsh file locally on your computer. You can then load the same file using TinyTSS and putting "127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com" in your etc/hosts file will allow you to restore to whatever version of the iPhone OS you have an ecid SHSH file for.





Which approach should you use? Both. You simply cannot be too safe. Umbrella is incredibly easy to use and TinyTSS is a command line tool that I plan on updating with a neat GUI.





As it stands now though, the download link on the right will always have the latest version. Check back regularly for updates.





And yes, I still plan on adding soft-activation and local activation to TinyTSS. I'm just quite busy and life > this. :) 

A Timely Warning - ipt3g

It seems the exploit that we were hoping would work (untethered) for ipt3g does not work as apple had implemented an unexpected fix.

That said, it is imperative that if you (or anyone you know) have an ipod touch 3g please please please get the shsh file from apple before they stop signing 3.1.1. Now that the jb is out, I think we can count the time apple will sign that fw version with days rather than weeks.

Repositories and applications that allow a user to obtain their SHSH files for future use cannot be more important to ipt3g users than right now. Cydia and my application are the two best ways to protect yourself against the firmware version restore lockout.
