iPhone OS 3.1.3 Released

They've released iPhone/iPod Touch 3.1.3 and so far are still signing 3.1.2 (as of 2/2/10). This doesn't mean that tomorrow (2/3/10) they'll continue signing 3.1.2 shsh requests. We're getting close to another drought. We've been surviving in 'years of plenty' and the 'years of want' are coming.

Ok all biblical analogies aside. 3.1.3 firmware offers zero substantial value. All it does is close the holes that enabled 3.1.2 to be jailbroken. Please, warn your friends, neighbors anyone that will listen. Have them save their shsh on Cydia or if they have even a remote amount of technical savvy, download the firmware umbrella and save their own shsh files locally.

3.1.2's days are numbered... This is probably the best we'll have it for a very long time. (My guess is late summer if any 4.0 potential exploits survive...)

Incidentally, I'll have Umbrella/TinyTSS updated for 3.1.3 signatures soon. I'm in no hurry as 3.1.3 is worthless...

*DO NOT UPDATE TO 3.1.3 IF YOU HAVE ANY DESIRES OR NEAR-FUTURE DESIRES TO JAILBREAK*

(Even if you have your shsh saved, I still wouldn't mess with it...)

*UPDATE: If I'm not mistaken, 3.1.3 also has the added bonus of updating your baseband to 05.12.01.

This is HUGELY bad for folks relying on having an unlocked iPhone. This means that even if you have your shsh saved on Cydia or locally, there is nothing you can do to get your baseband back to an unlockable version if you update to 3.1.3 out of curiosity.

Coming soon...

UPDATE: I've started working on the module that will intercept https requests from itunes to their activation server (albert). I'm adding a much-needed GUI to TinyTSS along with an option for soft/local activation. Soft Activation will (as of now) probably require some SIM information from your friend-with-an-official-carrier's SIM. Until/Unless I find a way to activate using an unofficial imei/imsi, this may be required.

UPDATE: I've been able to capture an activation request/response session. I'm looking at what would be required to turn this to an offline feature. After looking at it, this solution may soft activate unlocked phones as well. This means it would no longer be necessary to switch sim cards with a friend on an official carrier to activate your unofficial sim. I'll keep you all posted with more developments.

To make TinyTSS a bit more useful, I've decided to take a crack at implementing offline activation. Currently, TinyTSS will spoof the real TSS service but it still requires a net connection because of the activation request that is sent to albert.apple.com. I'm currently working on adding that functionality to TinyTSS and maybe (if possible) adding the activation response grabber to Umbrella. My hopes are that this will allow complete and total offline firmware restoration.

As this is quite a bit more difficult to implement, it will take me some time to implement. My motivation is luke-warm for the feature but I'm curious how many of you would be interested in this functionality. Vote with your comments (heh or your donations :) )

On Donations-

I've always sworn that Umbrella and TinyTSS will never have a donate button marring their UI. I don't believe in shamelessly begging folks for cash. So, because I have received quite a few emails asking how I can be reached for donations, I've decided to put a donate button on the sidebar. It's small and fairly tasteful.

Note that I appreciate anything you feel like donating. But remember that donations are completely voluntary. (Although big donations are a great way to get someone's ear). I never expect anything but I greatly appreciate what you do give.

TinyTSS -- All your iphone restores are belong to you

TinyTSS is a small java app that acts as your very own signature service.

When iTunes verifies your restore for your 3gs phone, it 'phones home' to see if you are allowed to restore to the version you are requesting. With TinyTSS + the shsh blob file(s) you obtained with Umbrella, you will be able to restore to the version of those shsh files forever!

People may wonder why I did this when Saurik is already doing the same thing. I'll explain my philosophy. I admire Saurik for what he has done and I thank him for pointing me in this direction. I simply think that I would rather have my shsh blobs on my personal machine AND on his server for safe keeping. This way if something happens to cydia, I can still restore my phone to the version I want to restore to.

Plus I have the peace of mind knowing that my files are safely in my possession. I don't have to worry that some catastrophic event could render my downgrades impossible.

So use cydia's shsh storage feature! But use Umbrella and TinyTSS if you are a power user that wants control over your own ecid shsh files and want to be able to use your own machine for restores.

I've fixed a bug that I introduced accidentally. I had forgotten to add a library or two to the Manifest so it wasn't able to run from the jar.

UPDATE: I've revamped the readme file. It should be a bit more informative. Also removed an error on JRE 1.5 on Leopard

I've gotten quite a few questions about donations. I'll accept donations but I want it clear that I did this for fun.
