Amazon fires affiliates as California passes Idiotic Law

Amazon has fired all of its California affiliates over a new idiotic California sales tax law. Ars Technica has the story:

Having gone through this in Colorado let me try to explain the facts.



All Amazon affiliates in the state PAY INCOME TAXES. That's right, they are already getting tax revenue from the program. Or should I say WERE getting tax revenue. California just wiped out millions of dollars in income taxes overnight by passing this law. Now they will get zero dollars in income tax and zero dollars in sales tax. For about $1000 annually you can setup a business in Wyoming or Nevada which has no income tax or silly Amazon tax. The large bloggers and web sites will go out of state and they will continue pretty much unaffected. But they will pay $0 in California taxes. Reducing tax revenue even further in a state that needs the money desperately.



In addition, this law really hurts the small bloggers who are just starting out and making a a couple hundred dollars a year. A few hundred dollars may not mean much rich elites on the Net. I have seen their posts in Colorado. However, a few hundred dollars means a lot to struggling families in a bad economy.



Amazon is stupid for not fighting these laws. They have the money and the lawyers to take the states to court and win. This is settled law. Mail order businesses have existed in the US for many decades and they never had to collect sales taxes. Several Supreme course cases support this position. And essentially, Amazon is nothing more than a mail order business without the paper catalog. However, they choose to instead fire their associates and let them fight it out in court on their own. Thus taking years to get a resolution.



The stupidity of the whole thing is staggering. And yet, state after state continues to shoot themselves in the foot.



In Colorado, the state House passed a repeal of our stupid Amazon law almost unanimously. However, the Democrat control Senate refused to have a hearing on the law this year. Hopefully it will get repealed next year.



And that is about as political as I will ever get on this blog. :)

MSI X460 X series ultraportable notebooks Thin but strong

Two of the X series ultraportable notebook computer from Micro-Star International (MSI) display at Computex Taipei 2011 computer exhibition. MSI X370 and X460 are the two newest family of laptops supertipis X-Slim series with high-definition screen technology.

If you read some of the linked stories, you will see that Firefox is moving toward the Google Chrome update model. Chrome updates the browser all the time in the background. A change from version 8 to version 9 is completely invisible to the end user.



For most users, this is a good thing as upgrading a piece of software is quite a chore. Not sure how this will play with IT departments.

Asus Transformer Eee Pad TF101 vs. Acer Iconia A500 Netbook Review

There are two new low cost tablets that just hit the stores recently. These Honeycomb powered tablets are the Iconia Tab A500 from Acer and the Transformer TF101 from ASUS. One glitch that you could find almost immediately is that they seem to be twins. It is hard to tell them apart. On the surface, they have similarities such as the screen size. Both are 10.1 inches capacitive screens with 1280�800 pixel resolution. Both run on the NVIDIA Tegra processor. Both tablets offer both 16GB and 32 GB memory options. There are also micro SD slots for extra 32 GB. In other aspects, they are all too similar. A notable difference would be the Transformer�s more brilliant screen that shows better white and black colors. This is thanks to the IPS LCD screen used by ASUS for this tablet. The viewing angles are similar to those of an iPad. Transformer has a wider viewing angle at about 178 degrees, compared to 160 degrees of Acer Iconia.

The Transformer is slightly wider compared to Iconia. Of course, there is also the keyboard dock for the ASUS tab. When it comes to battery life, it seems like ASUS was on a roll. It beats Iconia in battery life with is 9.5 hours which is 1.5 hours longer compared to Iconia which is not bad at all. However, it does not stop there since if you include the keyboard dock with its own battery and that means it can extend up to 16 hours, defeating Iconia and more than that, defeating the iPad 2.

For those who are inspired by mere looks, Transformer offers a good grip and is quite light. The back has a nice texture to it, you can say it feels very high end. Transformer also did some significant changes on the Honeycomb OS and now it adds some customizations so that you can improve the functionality of the Honeycomb OS. If you need more connectivity, Iconia has a lot to offer. There is Micro USB synching. There is a dock connector, USB Hosting compatibility with MicroHDMI and MicroSD as well as a charging socket. When it comes to multimedia experience and browsing, since the specs are all too similar, they are head to head on this aspect. ASUS is not yet finished with its baffling features. It has a 5MP camera located at the back and on front, a 2MP camera.

ASUS has a clear winner with its transformer. It is quite on the pricey side and with the keyboard dock; it is $50 more expensive than iPad 2. Nonetheless, it is a very powerful device and it seems very robust, well designed and the keyboard dock makes it all the more functional. The Iconia is left behind at some aspects but it is still a pretty decent tablet for your web browsing and app utilization aspects. It does not hurt though that the Transformer is really nice looking. It is still too early to say if Transformer will be able to snatch some audience from iPad 2 but nonetheless, it is a really nice product and it is worth the money.

Nook Touch Battery is not Holding Charge

I just got back from a week long trip. Much to my frustration, my brand new Nook Touch can't hold a charge longer than 4 days. This is not good for a device advertised to hold a charge for 2 months under normal use.



So to eliminate possible issues I:

1. Turned off Wifi


2. Removed my 8gb MicroSD card

The Nook showed no improvement. If anything it got worse.



So I called tech support this morning. First person was clueless. Second person disconnected. Third person (who was helpful) suggested I drain the device 100%. Then let the device charge for 4.5 hours to see if that resets the battery.



That should take 24 hours to try (for the battery to drain all the way). I will report back with the results.

Toshiba DynaDock Wireless USB Notebook Dock Strikes Back

Wireless USB got off to a shaky start, and while UWB-based short-range radio protocol is still struggling to gain popularity, Toshiba's new DynaDock Wireless U docking station has some potential that shouldn't be dismissed. The Toshiba WUSB dock with dual antennas pointing upwards is powered by Alereon's AL5100/5350 chipset to cover UWB spectrum from 3.1 to 10.6Ghz. In addition to meeting worldwide regulatory standards, the wireless notebook dock is equally capable as a wired counterpart by offering built-in DisplayLink video; 7.1 surround sound option; 4-port USB hub; 2 Sleep-n-Charge USB ports; and Ethernet.

In details, the DisplayLink video card can deliver up to 1680x1050 thru DVI interface, and Toshiba throws in a second wireless radio to further improve performance. The DynaDock Wireless U also has a convenient one-touch undock button to ensure all USB peripherals shut down properly when undocking. That's certainly better than selecting every connected product to eject individually. The WUSB driver is optimized as well to allow bi-directional isochronous support for wired USB video and audio products. Otherwise, neither USB headsets nor external webcams would work wirelessly. Toshiba DynaDock Wireless U will ship with a WUSB dongle and native XP/Vista support for a MSRP of $299, and Windows 7 driver is slated for release on October 22nd, the same day as the OS launch. Super Talent Demos SandForce-powered USB 3.0 Flash Drive

While it was not all that long ago we took a look at the Super Talent SuperCrypt and were blown away by its speeds, it was a tad on the bulky side for every day carry. It seems that if you wanted "Solid State Drive" levels of speed from a flash drive, you needed to be willing to give up some portability to get it. Well, that is about to change with the release of the all new Super Talent RC8 flash drive.

The RC8�s sleek all metal chassis makes it look very similar to the Express or Express RAM Cache, but inside lurks something special: a SandForce 1222 controller. When this controller is coupled with 8 dual package 25nm NAND chips the end result is near breathtaking for a "mere" flash drive. Under optimum conditions, we have seen ATTO benchmark numbers in excess of 265MB/s reads posted for the RC8. While it is a shame that new Super Talent didn't opt for the latest SF2181 controller (as it would have netted 550+MB/s speeds), the slightly older first gen new SandForce is still one fine controller that should easily be able to satisfy all but the most hardcore speed junky.As an added benefit, since SandForce controller compress all data written to the NAND, so the NAND inside the R8 will last longer than your typical flash drive (i.e. the cells wont wear out as fast as they otherwise would) and with its built in over-provisioning even when some cells do die, there will plenty of "spare" cells to take their place. Super Talent is planning on offering the RC8 in 25GB, 50GB and 100GB capacities and they should be available mid June. Command Line Aliases for Windows

Over the years, I have used Mac OS X and Unix quite a bit for work. However, my current job requires me to work with Windows XP and Windows 7. The Unix Bash shell has an alias feature which allows you to create short commands for commonly used commands. For example, typically I will setup an ll alias for the ls -l command on Unix. However, Windows doesn't have an equivalent. Or does it?



I have found that you can set up Windows batch files to work just like aliases in Unix. For example, let's say I want to set up aliases for ls and ll (which my brain is always trying use anyway). With a text editor create files that look like this:

@dir /w %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6



ll.bat

@dir %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6



The "@" symbol prevents the command from being echoed to the console making the batch file act just like a normal command. The "%" numbers are command line parameters passed to your command. This allows you to type ls C:\ and still have the command work.



To use the files, they must be placed somewhere in the path. Either a directory you have added to the path or the C:\windows\system32 directory. Once you have done this you should be able use the commands to your hearts content. Here are some examples I typically setup for all my Windows machines.



c.bat - CD to the root of the C Drive

@cd c:\



home.bat - CD to the current users home directory

@cd %homepath%



Simple command files like these can save you a lot of time when you work with the command prompt a lot.

Cyberduck FTP/SFTP/DAV Client Now on Mac App Store

Cyberduck (by David Kocher) has been my favorite FTP/SFTP client for the Mac for a number of years. It essentially has a folder interface with which you can drag and drop files to or from your destination. It includes a bookmark system that is very easy to use. And most important, it supports SFTP, in addition to FTP, which is the defacto standard for copying files on the Internet. Recently I also discovered that Cyberduck has full DAV support which works great with the Oracle Beehive server at work.



Cyberduck is still available for free as an open source product. But it is also available on the Mac app store for $24.95. A great price considering what a great product this is.
